Extracorporeal Magnetotransduction Therapy

What is EMTT

  • Extracorporeal Magnetotransduction Therapy (EMTT) is a non-invasive treatment that uses high-frequency, high-energy electromagnetic pulses to stimulate biological processes in musculoskeletal tissue.

  • EMTT was developed by Storz Medical in Switzerland, a company known for innovation in non-invasive medical technologies.

  • Unlike standard PEMF (pulsed electromagnetic field therapy), EMTT uses higher oscillation frequencies (100–300 kHz), which enables deeper tissue penetration and potentially stronger therapeutic effects.

How it Works (Mechanism of Action)

  • EMTT pulses generate electromagnetic fields that induce weak electric currents in body tissues.

  • These currents stimulate cellular metabolism, microcirculation, and anti-inflammatory processes.

  • Penetration depth can reach up to ~18 cm, allowing the therapy to target deeper structures like joints and spinal areas.

  • The pulses are brief, so they do not cause significant heating of tissue.

Treatment Parameters

  • Pulse frequency: Up to 10 pulses per second.

  • Oscillation frequency: 100–300 kHz.

  • Magnetic field intensity: Adjustable depending on treatment protocol.

  • Session duration: Usually 5–20 minutes.

  • Treatment course: Often 6–8 sessions, spaced a few days apart.

Indications / Applications

Used mainly in orthopaedics, sports medicine, and rehabilitation for:

  • Osteoarthritis (knee, hip, shoulder, etc.)

  • Tendinopathies (Achilles tendon, rotator cuff, etc.)

  • Chronic back pain, lumbar syndromes, radiculopathy

  • Myofascial pain and enthesopathies

  • Sports injuries / overuse syndromes

  • Post-surgical recovery, prevention of disuse atrophy

  • Stimulation of blood circulation and tissue regeneration

Awesome! 5 stars for the staff!!!

Benefits

  • Non-invasive and pain-free (no injections, no surgery).

  • High patient comfort (can often be applied without undressing).

  • Short sessions (minutes rather than hours).

  • Deeper penetration compared to standard PEMF therapy.

  • Can be combined with other treatments (e.g., physiotherapy, ESWT).

Safety & Contraindications

  • Considered safe and well tolerated, with minimal side effects.

  • Usual contraindications apply for electromagnetic therapies:

    • Pacemakers or other implanted electronic devices

    • Certain metal implants (depending on site and configuration)

    • Pregnancy

  • Long-term clinical data is still developing; more large-scale studies are ongoing.
